Continuing Services

Adult Services is our program and provides both individual sessions and support groups to adults who have experienced sexual violence and trauma in their life.

Program participants are validated for the pain they have gone through and learn to identify problem areas in their life that threaten themselves and their loved ones. They learn to build a support system and begin to change their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors as they embark on their healing journey of recovery. We are always accepting people for individual counseling so please feel free to contact us if you are interested.

Previous group participants testified:

  • "I learned that I will have my ups and downs and that's okay"
  • "I learned it is good to share and be with people and share and learn from each other."
  • "Group confirmed that I am not alone and that I don't have to go through anything alone."
  • "I learned that it's ok to feel. It's ok to be me. I'm learning to trust more by being open and honest without being afraid of being hurt."

Our Adolescent Services is a specialized program for female adolescents in Middle/High School.

Our Adolescent Program utilizes a combination of techniques in a supportive group setting. Some of these modalities include art, music and Cognitive processing tools.

These tools allow adolescents victims of sexual abuse and trauma the opportunity to process their pain and emotions in a safe environment.

We equip adolescents with the ability to recognize and challenge maladaptive behaviors and thought processes, while simultaneously developing their own set of recovery tools and positive coping skills in order to find healing from their trauma.

Previous Adolescent group participants testified:

  • "Fair Haven was a trustworthy place for me to discuss my biggest fears, my feelings, and build trust with myself and others. I am really thankful to have had this opportunity to be in the Anchor Program."
  • "The fact that Project Anchor was so hands on really helped me open up more. I let out my anger, sadness, hurt and everything else I was feeling in a safe way. While I was there not only did I learn a safe way to let my emotions out but I also learned how to let myself feel."

Victims of sexual assault are: 3 times more likely to suffer from depression, 6 times more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), 13 times more likely to abuse alcohol, 26 times more likely to abuse drugs and 4 times more likely to contemplate suicide.

After experiencing a traumatic event, PTSD can become a burden affecting many with: panic attacks, sudden mood swings, difficulty in social settings, and an overall inability to return to life as it was before the assault occurred. In recent years, animal assisted therapy has been shown to provide life-altering advantages to those who struggle with PTSD symptoms.

Therapy dogs are trained to calm someone having an anxiety or panic attack. Aspen, Fair Haven’s Certified Therapy Dog, has been trained to gently comfort and soothe clients by "hugging" or nestling up to the person by leaning against their leg or lying at/on their feet. She loves unconditionally! When our clients walk through the door, she is immediately happy to see them. Her tail wags and she "smiles" as they approach her. Having her on the greeting committee impacts the victims overall counseling experience.

Working at Fair Haven since she was just 9 weeks old, Aspen has grown into a beautiful two-year-old Great Pyrenees/Golden Retriever weighing 85 pounds. She shares an office space with her handler and our Executive Director, Kelly Vates.  When they are not working with clients, they are out in the community spreading awareness and educating others of the long term effects of sexual abuse.

In addition to client services, our long term goal is to use Aspen in the schools to engage young children with our original anti-violence campaign, “Paws Off” .  This campaign will consist of coloring books featuring a "cartooned" Aspen and a series of books that highlight  Aspen's many experienes at the doggie day care. The intention of each story will focus on abuse prevention, violence prevention, respect and tolerance of others differences.
