Steps to Becoming a Volunteer Medical Advocate

 

Step One:

Fill out a Volunteer Application

  • This application can be found at:  www.asafeport.org
  • Or by calling (219) 961-4357 and asking for Becca.

Step Two:

Participate in a brief interview with a Beacon of Hope team member.

We would love to meet you and answer any questions you have about the program.

Step Three:

Attend Training

We have two ways that training can happen and you choose which one best fits your schedule.  Both trainings equal about 20 hours.

  1. Online Training (ongoing)
  2. In-Person Training (takes place four times a year)

Step Four:

Beacon Orientation

This last step ensures that you’re 100% ready to go out on your first hospital call.  This step is around 4 hours and is scheduled when you’re ready.

Step Five:

Welcome aboard!

We are excited to add you to the responder schedule!  We pray that your time spent with a victim of sexual assault is not returned void.

 

Commitment with the Beacon of Hope Volunteer Responder team:

 

We ask that you:

 

  1. Commit to six months on the Beacon of Hope team.
  2. Sign-up for (4) eight hour on-call shifts a month.
  3. Attend one Volunteer meeting a month. 
    • Meeting take place at Fair Haven Center for Women on:
      • 4th Monday of the month – 6:30pm-7:30pm or
      • 4th Saturday of the month – 9:00am-10:00am

 

General Requirements:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • It has been at least one year since you became personally connected to this issue.
  • You may receive counseling now, or have in the past, but do not feel a sense of crisis in your everyday life.
  • Volunteer must consent to and successfully complete a full background investigation pursuant to NRS 179-180 et seq., which includes a criminal history check and fingerprinting.
  • You are not currently struggling with substance use.
  • You have a strong support system in place.
  • You feel 100% ready to be a Beacon of Hope volunteer.
